Our history

In a Joint Notice from May 1995, the Ministry of Communication (MC) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) asserted that in order to effectively promote the participation of Society in decisions regarding implementation, management and use of the Internet, an Internet Steering Committee would be created. This committee would be composed by the MC, the MCT and institutions for the operation and management of backbones, as well as representatives from access or information providers, users, and the academic community.

The Steering Committee was created by Interministerial Ordinance 147 of May 31st, 1995. Its members were appointed by Interministerial Ordinance 183 of July 3rd, 1995, which was later amended by succeeding Ordinances.

On September 4th, 2003, Decree 4,829 of September 3rd, 2008, was published in the Federal Official Gazette, establishing the mission and the procedural regulations for the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee. The decree was amended by succeeding Ordinances.
